Talk:RIAA

From iA wiki

This is a Big topic which should be interlaced with several others.. relating things like legality, file sharing etc etc.. this is tied with the very history of mp3s in the public eye. -- rack

I am very angry with what the RIAA have been doing the past few days. I don't think people should be "sharing" music on a massive scale - i want people to buy music and support the artists - but this latest case with 12-year-old Brianna is the last straw. Threatening to sue for copyright violations and then settling for cash... Can someone please explain why this independent organization should be filling its own coffers with settlement payments that, if anything, should be going to the artists and labels? The RIAA already gets paid by the labels! Now both the music fans AND the artists and labels lose. What a scam. -- Amw

I really think a legal fund should be setup for that woman, whoever she is. I looked on the slashdot thread about it but I couldn't find anybody who mentioned the idea. I'll look around because I'd definitely pay 20 bux to that lady. I'm sure the press would love that: "Internet picks up the tab for RIAA's assault on 12-year-old."
Although the idea wasn't originally mine, I totall predicted this in the Piracy entry: "The MPAA and RIAA is actively pursuing these and "Not Good" rated violators, despite the possibility that 10 year-old Mikey from Chattawuga getting sued for 10,000 dollars is horrible publicity."
Interesting, the actual event was even more compelling. I mean a 12 year old named Brianna fined $2,000? Who was quoted by Faux News as: "I got really scared. My stomach is all turning." These guys are idiots. Webfork
And did you see the turnaround in the second article? "I love music and don't want to hurt the artists I love." Doesn't get much more scripted than that! The interesting thing is that Fox are one of the few networks who can report fairly reasonably on this, because all of the other media conglomerates have their fingers in the music industry pie - not so with Fox. I hope this blazes through the media tomorrow too - it would be a tragedy if this event disappeared in a puff of smoke. People have to know. -- Amw
True... we can't expect Disney-owned channels or CNN (owned by Time/Warner) to say jack shit. This is media watch groups like like [fair.org] are so important. Webfork

Will the RIAA ever be disbanded or can it go bankrupt? It would be interesting to see if the RIAA finances are going down the tube. As they increasingly become less effective fewer artists will want to sign up to the labels. Combine this with lose of revenue from music sales and the RIAA books might not be looking so good. Alternatively the big boys of the music industry might increase their spending on advocacy, lawyers, etc and prop up the RIAA with more funds. The information is most likely to be found in the RIAA annual reports. I couldn't be bothered making a comparison to previous years. I'll just read about in the years to come. - ABliss

Greplaw: Copyright punishment for the victims. How 2 music publishers stole music from a musician. Compelling fact: The musician made a net loss with the legal case too because the legal fees were over $100.000 whereas he was able to get $22.000 in total from the case.

Makes me smile i live in a country where the legal system is based on 'the winner takes all'. -- User:dpi
