Talk:Technology

From iA wiki

This explanation in it's current form doesn't go well with me.. something's wrong about it, but I can't put my finger on it. -- rack

Ok, what part dont you like? I just read the entry and clicked the links and it works for me. Technology is new things we do to benefit us, a mix of creativity and scientific processes allow for mechanical breakthroughs which we call technology. Is the definition too broad for you? -- ABliss
Hmm.. I think it's the current emphasis on the "mechanised production" concept.. perhaps just the "mechanical" concept. Perhaps it's just the current view of technology isn't necessarily the creation of a thing. I don't know quite how to word my feelings on this. Perhaps my own view is that technology is sortof like an adaptation of existant tools.. maybe a dictionary reference would help things out. -- rack

I'd really like to find an example of a technology that was created and used that did not then create new problems. - ABliss

I suspect Hydrogen fuel cells will be that. We are surrounded by Hydrogen - the fuel cells don't explode on impact, and they are enviornmentally very friendly. I dunno, it's possible the Hydrogen-compression process uses a whole lot of electricity at which point it would cease to be all that clean in the long run. - Webfork

Sort of like traffic lights, which was suggested to me, as a technology without hangups. Traffic lights need electricity which is mostly problematic and then of course to make the metals, plastics and wires we need great big stinking industries, not to mention the transport of such material to where they are to be used. Then if they fail they cause a new set of problems. - ABliss
I see... well, traffic lights that were powered by solar energy would be good. They'd probably still require a backup on normal lines but if solar cells get a whole lot cheaper in the next few years - it might be an option. I've seen an increasing number of street signs with solar cells on top. At this point, you're right, its not an adequate example. Webfork
