Gopher was in many ways a pre-cursor to the World Wide Web. Gopher had no particular graphical interface - it was all text, yet included hyperlinks to other "sites" and "pages". After the ground-breaking NCSA Mosaic web browser was released, the World Wide Web overtook Gopher in popularity and it was rendered obselete.
