File Extensions: .GZ, .GZIP, .TAR.GZ

A free, open-source compression format used by almost any Operating System but most commonly used under UNIX-like systems. A GNU-developed file format, designed to compress single files, it is often paired with TAR, which combines multiple files together.

Increasingly, Gzip is being used to compress data streams on-the-fly such as Web pages (known as http compression) and SSH.

Gzip is not ZIP. It is decompressed in UNIX instead by the "unzip" command or in Windows with a program like WinZIP.
