XviD is an ISO MPEG-4 compliant video codec. Not a product, it's an open-source project developed and maintained by people from all over the world.
Ogg Theora is another, seperate, open-source video codec.
XviD came out as best codec in Doom9.net's codec comparision as of january 2004.
