Wikipedia: VST Plugin

Plug-ins for many music programs that act as individual programs or DSP systems to modify sound. VST Plugins are used by SoundForge, Audacity, and many more. These are popular with computer music producers.

An alternative to VST plug-ins, which are cross-platform, are DirectX plugins.

VST on Linux

Since VST plugins are Win32 DLLs, VST on Linux is a problem. One can either run a native VST architecture and/or use WINE. More information:
