No problem dude , think the info r0ckz here , and would like to contribute to the site ;)
Thanks for the formats. Is it bad wiki style to break plurals? I did like so: Fascists, thinking that Fascist would be more general definition, or should i just do Fascists (as a link to Fascist)? crtn
- Just to hijack this page for a sec... First of all it's Fascist :-) (Yes, i'm a grammar nazi.) As far as the plural thing goes, i tend to create a redirect page to the singular, whereas most of the other editors tend to use a bar. I don't think anyone breaks the plural before the S. And now back to your regularly scheduled Webforkian programming... -- Amw
- Oh crap! I swear I can spell. That's pretty egregious. *double checks spelling*
- Hehe... sure. To answer your question, I generally change plural entries by doing the following:
- Its really up to you but I think it looks a lot better.
- Webforkian... hehehe... Webfork
I apprechiate your editing work on the stuff I write here very much. It's just great, not authoritary at all, it's constructive, it's creating precision, it helps my English, yes, it actusally helps making the world a better place. "You'll get a case of beer for that!" (The cowboy-commander in "Apocalypse now" to the helicopter crew, after they've shot the 2CV with the canon on from the bamboo bridge) mattis
- You are making the world a better place. Collaborative writing and definition is how language is originally created. Better languages means better understanding. Better understanding improves everyone. Webfork
mattis again. I'm in a desperate situation. After understanding that a further work on CoForum is impossible, where the admin and most active person is about the opposite of what you are, I moved to wikiwiki.de. This wiki is stoneage and nothing to work on, as there is not even a way for recovering deleted pages. Contents is growing rapidly. I do know 3 wikis by now. Could you imagine, that I move with the stuff from wikiwiki to a "german" branch here? I do not feel quite well not knowing the admin Erik here (I mailed him several times) - he can cancel everything in minutes - but it would be better than going on only for another single day on wikiwiki. I don't know if I can do as fine editing work on the german part as you do here. I would more take time for translating, so that the two languages stay connected. It would be a very good thing. Maybe even more languages could join in, imagine! What about it. Where to put the question so that everybody can react on it? Or do it if you want.
Thanks for everything you did yet.
mattis
- I would propose you toss out a couple bux and get your own server if you keep running into problems with admins and destinations and stuff like that. As far as multi-language sites, that would be excellent but I'm a moron american and I only speak English. To that end, I've managed to learn how to speak/write it really well (I'm articulate and I have a professional job writing english) but I do recognize most of the world speaks something else.
- One of the things that you have to realize is that people mostly do work on wikis because they feel like it. Asking them to reach out and start doing wikis in multiple languages sounds a lot like work and projects and isn't something most people are willing to commit to. Its also something I cannot really assist with. Webfork
Hey what rock were you living under that the Chems were "one of the first" electronic music albums? Even if you ignore the 80s there's still S'Express, Technotronic, 2 Unlimited, Capella, Black Box, Snap, etc. I do remember there being an "electronica breakthrough" in America around 95-ish when the Prodge and Chems and Orbital got popular (mostly due to the "Hackers" soundtrack (!)), but sheesh, man, talk about American-centric! :-)
- Yes did you read the word "recent"? Hackers was in '95. And Chemical Brothers was commercially accepted quite internationally. And they're Brittish. Don't get me wrong: I love Prodigy and Orbital but, unless I'm mistaken, they've received a lot more commercial accpetance as an electronic-sounding band (Prodigy's popular songs had very distinct industrial rock elements and Orbital isn't as widely recognized).
- Oh i wasn't trying to get bitchy about it, i just found it interesting that the Chems would stand out for you against - say - Fatboy Slim or Moby or something. And that's why i added the pages, precisely because i think it'll be fascinating to see what different people consider to be important/significant/relevant pieces. -- Amw
Sorry about being a bit of a prick the past week or two, i've been really stressed out at work. Feel free to delete some of my lamer /talk messages if you come across them. -- Amw
- No problem. If you can come to iA to vent constructively by being an editor and developing this Wiki, all the better. And your sensitivity is appreciated. Webfork
A bit late, but still, thank you very much for the emulation/emulator entry. i wanted to add emulators on this site, since (imo) they are nifty, helpfull tools every now and then. Your entry was a good key to achieve my goals. Gnuf's (: -dpi
- My pleasure. Its been a red-link'd wiki entry on a number of pages for a while now so it only made sense to fill in. :) Webfork
Referring to Free Software, "how's this explanation?". Very good! -- dpi
- Cool, thanks. Webfork
Removed Win4Lin and VirtualPC because you need to have a copy of Windows in order to run those. --dpi
what's all the grrring about? crtn
- Uh... I forgot. I type "grrr" a lot so its hard for me to place the last time I said it. For the casually curious, "fuck" is also popular with me. Webfork
Hi Webfork, nice to meet you :) I appreciate your info in this wiki, it was useful to me a few times. As i am also a wiki gnome ;) I didn't hesitate to add a few bytes. BTW thx for not just editing/deleting my entry on RAR but moving it to the talk page, thats nice style. - Currently I do little video stuff, ie splitting AVI with dvdrip, do you have experience with that?? - Have you already had a look at my NooWiki (unfortunately it's offline since a few days, the HD is gone :[ ) ... have a nice day, FlorianKonnertz aka groovehunter
- I'm glad its been of some service - that's why I'm here. And yes I've had experience with video and video editing but I'm not currently working with any video systems. Welcome to iA. Webfork
Damn dude, nice cleaning up work the other day. How did you find all the dead entries? -- Amw
- Thanks - did a search for "delete" and opened up all the pages by holding Ctrl+click in Mozilla Firefox then just basically pasted the "Enter new text" message there. I think we originally used "Delete" so that pages would not actually save to the server but I don't think Erik goes through and dumps them. Besides, he could probably search any actual files on the server with that message which is the same as "Delete." Webfork
Hi webfork, we'll meet again, will we? I'm on CommunityWiki now mostly. See 'ya. -- MattisManzel
- Link to it (communitywiki). Webfork
I set you on the tree in WikiFolks http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/community/WikiFolks. Add someone yourself, if you feel like. MattisManzel
on RSI i've found 2 interesting websites. Just posting them here. I'll contribute some more to the Wiki when i have more Free time... Oh and Tiesto is coming to my hown town. The bad news is it he's performing at a huge, expensive pop-festival :"( - dpi
- On this rare occasion I feel astonishingly lucky as Tiesto is coming by himself and playing for around $15 a ticket. Later this month, Sasha will likewise be appearing for only $12. This is one of those few times that I'm really glad electronic/trance/dance music is dead here because I get to see International DJs for the same price as a good meal. Sting, meanwhile, costs 5-10x that.
- And thanks for the RSI links. Webfork
- Who's Sasha? $15 or $12 is really cheap IMO. Here it is far more expensive though i don't know exact prices. Here's a live-TV-set of Tiesto, playing live on Pinkpop 2004. I can't hear it live outside, but a friend of mine who lives 200m from the festival can. I'm searching an archive of the video ;) (Other formats than Real here).
- Sasha (http://www.sasha.co.uk/) made the album AirDrawnDagger, one of the most anticipated trance titles of 2002. He often plays with John Digweed.
- Thanks for the Tiesto link. Webfork
- I like this track Dj Tiesto - "Urban Train" (Way Out West Remix). Have you heard it? I like the vocals, minimal and without meaning, spread across lovely melodic bassline, loops, pads and synth riffs, with lots of drum, bass and changing techy sounds. Djing with this kind of track is always fun, especially if you match the beat on the 4 th of 16 th bars. The melody and rhythms then have more interaction and make for a better mix. - ABliss
- I can picture Way Out West putting a little more of a punchy feel to some of Tiesto's lighter, trancy settings. I'll see if I can find it. And yes - Tiesto is fun to mix and his own work tends to be the right bridge between complex and minimalist - sometimes a tough ballance in good Trance. I've seen him twice and each time it was just excellent. This entry makes me want to get back into my online mixing. Webfork
Perhaps you would explain your reason for removing the link to the giftfile system from Pretty Good Privacy. Consider:
- PGP applications are not limited to email
- the giftfile system is a web service that uses PGP as a foundation
- you have removed a link to a project sponsored by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, while leaving links for two services run by for-profit corporations
In short, I think you are being overzealous in your "spam removal".
--JohnBelmonte (still waiting for your answer)
John,
I didn't notice your question sooner because the convention here on iA is to place new questions at the bottom of the talk. Still, I should have noticed it.
The reasons I cut your link are twofold:
- I visited your site and did a thorough search for "pgp" or "pretty" in an effort to find some mention of PGP being used in your system. I didn't find it and assumed that its addition here was irresponsible. I found it odd that an organization didn't want to note the use of the tried and tested security system. I encourage you to post this fact on your site.
- The section you placed your file under was correct in the sense that it was literally correct but not sequencially correct (meaning the subsection should have been "services that use PGP mail" rather than "services that use pgp" ;).
I've re-added your link at the base of the document and modified my own subheadings. Let me know if this is acceptable. Webfork
Thanks for responding. I guess some day I'd like to see non-email applications of PGP enjoy the same status as email applications.
- Agreed. PGP (or GPG) as a protocol and a system has been tried and tested perhaps more than any other and is therefore a highly secure, pluggable solution. Reinventing the wheel or using RSA keys seems to just skip over PGP's availablility.
Try this search to see our references to PGP. Our web site's main pages are not geared toward a technical community and make no mention of PGP. Rather, it's covered in technical documents off the main pages (and seen on iA, if you happen to follow that).
- I see now... I can understand the need to keep technical aspects away from user pages but I still feel that PGP is well known to make it a draw for the security consious. Certainly moreso than simple SSL users. Still, that's just an opinion.
If you are interested in an effective solution about this wiki's spam, write to me at john@neggie.net.
- Any suggestions you can provide concerning wiki spam are welcome and encouraged. I've dropped you a note at the address provided. I would be in your debt. Webfork
-John
Hey Webfork, spam is getting on my nerves. I'm linking WikiSpam pages and try to get WikiSpamBusters going http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/community/WikiSpamBusters (see WikiSpam there too). What you think about it. Where are your WikiSpam thoughts here? MattisManzel
- I agree. But its one of the rare things we've decided to keep to ourselves to prevent spammers from analyzing and sneaking past our defences. Webfork
You know in the section "Who is iA's Audience?" about what the audience is interested in...I feel that the iA crowd is not concerned about law topics much. Basically I think they understand that the law and the net don't mix very well, that the internet is inherently anarchic. - ABliss
- I think the problem is that the law is being used to restrict activites on the Internet and there is almost zero initiative to establish our rights. The law seems intent only on punishing people, never protecting them. For example, it is absolutely legal for employers to read your work e-mail, listen in on your phone calls, and beyond because it is seen as their property. Spam is something universally disliked but the justification for its attack is the billions of messages that are clogging Internet transfers. There seems to be no one saying "it is your right to not have to recieve crap you didn't ask for."
- This is one of the primary arguements behind the Federal Defense of Marriage constitutional amendment - its a restriction. Nevermind many of the other arguements for or against: we're talking about a Bill of Rights is not a Bill of Restrictions. The constitution contains no restrictions on The People. Webfork
I'm not sure if it was your deleting and blocking, that Lycos screensaver blocking spammers or something else but the spam seems to have slowed and it is much better. Thanks for the effort. - ABliss 03:12, 4 Dec 2004 (GMT)
- Well, first a big thanks Erik and friends as well for getting mediawiki up and running.
- I think gradually the Internet as a whole has stood up to spammers and things are generally just getting better. I'm really glad we finally got that up and working. Spam hurt my general interest in this project and I haven't been working on iA much anymore as a result. I may have moved on but its nice to see that all that dedication and work I did for over a year wasn't thrown away due to a handfull of jerks. - Webfork
IceCast archive/forum
Webfork:
I added a link to an IceCast archive/forum to the IceCast page. Can you explain why is it taken out?
The link is a useful third-party tool for the IceCast users. If you have an IceCast question, you can search or post it there. It's a nice complement to the IceCast mailing lists. Why remove something that is useful?
The link is here: http://www.nabble.com/Icecast-f2880.html The IceCast mailing lists are here: http://www.icecast.org/mailinglist.php - note there is no way to search the archive.
I just noticed that on the IceCast wiki discussion page someone else also questioned why is this link removed. See: http://www.infoanarchy.org/wiki/index.php/Talk:IceCast

adding something
I have found a few places where core principles could be inserted about goals and objectives or a basic anarchic platform. I have had work deleted twice and that is fine but the reasons have been somewhat silly. A clear posting guideline is brevity yet I got dinged for making "bullet points." Lots of superflous writing on Anarchy and I was trying to be concise. When perusing this site I find a lot confusing and little coherence. I feel like it is work done by Hakim Bey literalists.
- Great! Talk about THAT! We've had so many casual authors for so long come and go and just leave these little weird, disconnected articles, the tendency is to delete them because they don't seem to have any point or use. But obviously you have something to say or discuss so by all means do so. That is to my best estimation why this Web site is here. We try to keep things useful and/or grounded for the benefit of visitors and overall organization. Webfork
Month of the Sysops
I declare the next 30 days the "iA:Month of the Sysops". Only sysops will be allowed to edit articles. But during this month, I want to basically allow anyone to become a sysop. I have given you bureaucrat rights, and I'd like you to manage the assignment of sysop rights, if at all possible. To do this, you have to go to Special:Userrights, select the user, select "sysop", and save. Feel free to give sysop rights to anyone you already know on the wiki as being trustworthy. If someone screws up, remove it. No process necessary. Sysops cannot do anyhting that is irreversible, and I have full trust in you.
On the above page, I'd like to put some instructions, including a link to contact you. MediaWiki provides a gateway for emailing users, but you need to have an email address specified in your preferences. Would you be willing to do that? Your email address would not be visible to anyone unless you reply to mail you receive, and others can only send you mail if they confirm their own email address first, so it's fairly spam-safe.
What do you think? If it works, we get lots of new sysops, which helps with the spam, and for a month at least, you guys can fully focus on content rather than cleaning up after spambots.--Erik 05:15, 13 December 2005 (GMT)
Oh, BTW, since the change you don't have to bother blocking any remaining spambot IPs, we just have to clean up the spam they left behind.--Erik 05:16, 13 December 2005 (GMT)
Slight change of plans - I've made Ziv and JoSwujDa bureaucrats as well. Please list yourself on iA:Month of the Sysops if you want to help with appointing new sysops.--Erik 05:43, 13 December 2005 (GMT)
Some sysop could...
Hello again. I returned to this wiki and started to fix minor things. Since you are a sysop, could you delete the redirecting page Soulseek, so that article SoulSeek could be moved to its right place. Maybe the developers have changed the spelling of the name, but at least now the official page of the program calls it Soulseek, not SoulSeek. Tristram Shandy
