Describing something occuring without user interface; happening in the background.

Examples

• Routine that detects new hardware and adds it automatically.
• Program that is installed to perform a job (such as a firewall or anti-virus) that protects the computer automatically. When the user is interfaced when there is a problem, the program ceases to be transparent.
• DHCP - an easy to use network protocol that connects to the network automatically, receiving an IP Address without any additional configuration - plug in to the wall and start surfing.
• Distributed computing projects - running in the background to fight cancer, search for intelligent life, or brute force encryption.
