Talk:Windows ME

From iA wiki

I know people who use ME on their laptops. They keep it, knowing full well how difficult that can be, thinking that it's easier to keep ME than deal with driver issues for 98se. It appears that ME, as prebuilt for a brand-name system, is much more stable than a regular ME install. The one friend runs photoshop and such, and demands a lot out of the system. He says ME just does the job. -- rack

Just have your friend keep the laptop for about a year more and add some more software. Windows 95-ME versions eventually have a critical mass when it comes to their registry. For whatever reason, the system hangs at shutdown, waiting on the "Shutting down" screen indefinitely. I'm sure I can dig up an article about this so you won't have to take the word of some random dude.

Windows ME is especially bad about this because, by default, it has a number of Windows programs that 98 doesn't have. Not only that, but ME is an add-on from 98SE is an addition on from 98 is an addition on from 95. Not a good code.

Ya, he's used it for a couple of years now, but he refuses to install anything.. just the one or two programs he requires. He's also paranoid-careful about playing with it for anything other than a few programs. ->
If you think Me is bad, I've seen computers which have been upgraded from Me to XP.. if you think the one is bad, the combination of the two is far, far, worse. It'll "work", but only just.. it'll be suboptimal forever, doing lots of fun pagefile thrashing and such. -- rack

I use Windows ME only acutally... heses my reason for staying: My computer is a constantly evolving tweak. COmponents are forever changing, and with the XP activation code (different from the serial key) issues, it isnt worth it for me. I'm knowledgeable enough to eventually work out any issues (conflicts) in the system, and have the utilities to keep the registry trim and slender. I dont have a single prog that wont run on this platform, from SoundForge 6.0 to ProTools, Pagemaker or anything else. Why would I switch? 8/1/04

I sympathize with your choice in the sense that I am also a tweak hound in many senses of the word. The copy of Windows XP I'm running has so many little additions and quirks, it would be a real tradjedy if my computer got stolen or some wholesale data corruption event happened. But the Windows 9x series would be a lot less negative if it were not for the stacking of code upon code since Windows 95. According to some, Windows ME was created primarily to compete with RealPlayer. Windows 2000 was a rewrite, has a much more stripped-down design, and is what I would encourage you to switch to. It is also the most mature Windows OS in terms of security.
I'll post some links on the Windows ME page as evidence as to why you should switch. Essentially: bulky, old, and crash-prone. But I'll let the links speak for me and you can decide for yourself. Webfork
