How about instead linking to Encrypting Your Network Links? Also, SSL can run in userspace. And SSH tunneling too. My ISP allows me to run SSL/SSH Tunneling on one of their shell services to securely read mail via POP3, while i can't do that via VPN. This gives SSL/SSH an advantage. Not sure if they run IPsec with Opportunistic Encryption -- dpi
