Talk:Religion

Out of all the gay guys I have met and chatted to, it is the religious ones, esp, the Catholics, that are mentally "fucked up" the most. I strongly dislike the propaganda they preach about sin and evil. - ABliss
- LOL... dude, you must really hate this religion thing. I've met some crazy religious zealots but you're the first crazy anti-religious zealot. I can only hope you're here to ballance the scales in some format because I can't really see who you're trying to convince - it seems like you're just venting. - Webfork
- :)...I'm not anti-religion as such. I'm just anti-stupid and against falseness. I'm just writing about what I believe is the truth with logic in an effort to make a better world for myself. Sometimes I make off the cuff remarks, but that is normal. We all do that, all the time. Yesterday I was up the street and this elderly women handing out some leaflet said "Jesus loves you." I said "Get away from me." I feel she should be doing something better to get progress. - ABliss
Few notes:
I cut the whole bit about the earth being the center of the universe (Ptolmey, I think) because nobody really believes that anymore.
Also, although I think this demonstrates a good point, it just didn't fit:
- One tenet of nearly all religions is the belief that others should be treated in a manner that oneself would like to be treated. This concept can be problematic because humanity does not understand the full consequences of our actions, particularly in regards to the future.
If someone could go back and demonstrate this as a larger issue concerning religion, please re-add it. As of now, it feels to me a little specific. Webfork
Finally someone gave me a definition of spirituality that means something. That is, spirituality is the propensity to devote one's life to things that do not exist.
What a waste of time and energy that is! People should devote their time to things that exist such as poverty, suffering and inequality. Then they might actually make a difference to the world. - ABliss
- At some point the idea of Karma and being a good person and pursing good things takes a certain amount of faith that there is a system at work to benefit those who work against poverty, suffering, and inequality. That its not just all for nothing or fighting against an unstoppable tide. Most people don't believe that there is such a system at work or that their actions have positive benefit so they don't take action as you say. Belief in this higher system, whether that's Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, or Jesus doesn't matter to me so long as people keep *some* kind of stubborn faith in doing good stuff. I'm a big fan of good stuff so whatever makes you do that, more power to them. I think you're more angry about the evil purpitrated in the name of weird things that seem to follow religion such as abortion bombers, zionists, and extremists everywhere. Webfork
