Talk:Music

From iA wiki

I think some of content under hardware and software might be better place on the Audio entry, or even on the hardware and AV_Software pages. - ABliss

Hmm.. art is an interesting branch. Perhaps the arts need to be tied together on one central page. Perhaps make it the other side of a coin and the brother of media and information? -- rack

I have a sideline which is the maintenance of a reasonably large music collection. It started well before I even had awareness of digital music, or even mp3s.. I've more recently been able to organize it all thanks to my recent digitization of a chunk of my collection. Unfortunately, file sharing and even wide use of mp3s are sufficiently immature to thwart my ability to properly share it.. but I have the mechanics down pat. If someone out there is interested, I could probably start up a page speaking on the issue of how I "genre"-sort my music. It's a bit immature, since it involves the listening to thousands and thousands of songs and figuring out how they're related to oneanother, but perhaps we could get together and work out some standardizable mechanics. Heck, maybe there are actual mechanics out there which define genre and somebody can point me to them. -- rack

ABliss has sorted much of his music by genre and may be able to help you here. As far as sharing goes... While i don't agree with it, i don't see anything stopping you. Put the CD in the drive, rip to MP3, load up WinMX. It doesn't matter if you're on a 56k with a metered connection - you're still contributing even if it's just a few hours a week. I'm a huge music fan, and i'd be interested to hear about what you have and what sort of recommendations you'd make. -- Amw
I'm pretty much dedicating a server for such things. I'm mainly interested in music just to resurrect some old interests in music. I also like the idea of binding songs together by genre because it lets someone introduce themselves to more artists much more easily. Thanks to music sharing, I have a much improved love for what's out there.. especially since I don't have to go through standard media to listen to "new" art. I'm more than a little fed up with the side of things that's only media-controlled. Fake celebrity, engineered music.. bleh. -- rack

A few weeks ago i considered putting together a music wiki. Music is SUCH a broad topic, i would love to hear lots of people's opinions and recommendations in this pseudo-formal/informal format that a wiki provides. Amazon recommendations are okay, i guess some people use file-sharing or listen to the radio, but i love reading about music too. Do you think there'd be any interest out there for something like this? No point creating a wiki if noone goes. -- Amw

It's definitely going to be a project of mine, and will include specific research on some artists. If you'd like to just contribute to that or make a sideline project on my own wiki, just to save the effort of maintaining your own, I wouldn't mind. Drop me a note on Rack/Talk. For now, I think that creating a spinoff topic between file sharing and music might do very well right here. We're already touched on some popular legal issues. -- rack
A Music wiki is a good idea, likewise a Game wiki would be good to discuss, review and comment on games, etc. I've finally started adding to the tourism wiki - CapitanCook. Wiki's are good for any type of knowledge representation. What about a pornography or a sexuality based wiki? If someone not working on them yet, it's just a matter of time. - ABliss

I couldn't imagine a time in the future when I would "buy" music. I think that is wrong. Sometimes I like to go to a music store to find a track or title and when they point me to the shelf, I say that I would never pay for music, I download it for free. - ABliss

Just goto the shows when they come through town. That's how most artists have made their cash from the beginning. For me, I buy the albums but not when I'm poor. Webfork

Here's my issue with shows. I write music. I would love to make a living writing music. But i don't want my lifestyle to consist of travelling to all kinds of different countries and cities, leaving family and friends behind, dealing with customs, timezones, flakey promoters and all that drama that comes with doing shows. If my music already makes people happy in a recorded medium, why can't i reasonably expect to derive an income from that? -- Amw
Easy peasy. Your notions of proprietary information are not compatible with free speech. You should read the Freenet developmentphilosophy so your dreams are not ruined by reality. You could start writing children's books like Madonna is. - ABliss

I'm not making any judgements. If we're talking historically about professional musicians, the truth is, they make almost all their money from playing shows. I was a music studio tech for almost a year and there's definitely a place for us in music. Selling your work is possible but, with some exceptions, you will make more by touring. Webfork
Why dont you make judgements? I dont believe it. - ABliss

I am wondering if anyone can recall a recent slashdot or other website article about the first ever music exchange over the internet? A link would be appreciated, cause I cant find it. - ABliss

In response to Music/Recommendations: The band is called Chumbawamba not Chumbawumba. I saw them on Sziget 2004. It was just Awesome even though i had to vomit after the gig (pogo and fat "Asian" food is NOT a good combination...). What a great atmosphere over there! It was one of the few bands i saw on Sziget 2004 since i mostly been to DJs but it was worth the long walk. Highly recommended, indeed. -- dpi
