Talk:Good Thing
From iA wiki
I'm a vegitarian but whether or not that's a good thing is very much an opinion. Webfork
- I would suggest that it is a good thing, because it reduces cruelty and suffering (which no sane person likes) but its not everyones preference, and health concerns remain. Consider that people dont know why or care why it is a good thing. Also is someone a vegitarian only if they dont eat meat, or if they eat many vegitarian meals? - ABliss
- Due to the way most meat industries work, yes, there's a lot of animal cruelty, which is absolutely immoral. Animals also usually are inefficient food sources - eating far more pounds of food than they actually produce. Vegitarians also have a much lower cholesterol level than meat-eaters. But the killing animals for food, in and of itself, being a bad thing is an opinion. Many parts of the world simply can't sustain on fruit and grain alone.
- As to the "what is a vegetarian" bit, I really don't know the official line on that. I would think its someone who is essentially a herbivore but eats meat by-products such as cheese or milk. However, some people claim to be vegetarians but eat fish. Webfork
- I would argue that someone is a vegetarian when they don't eat meat by choice. They may eat vegetarian by accident, but many "normal" meals are vegetarian (or vegan) without regard for cruelty, etc. Since vegetarianism is a philosophy it needs purpose imo. crtn
The idea that something can be fundamentally good or bad is a fallacy. It is a claim to authority, and is based upon the presumption that there are absolute morals in this universe. This type of thinking is one of the main arguments that dogmatic movements and relegions rely on to oppress and control. They may not be immediately apparent, but there are reasons that someone thinks that a certain thing or action is good or bad. I would expect more from a supposed anarchist community.
By the way, I am not a vegetarian. I have been both vegetarian and vegan in the past but recently, I cannot understand why anyone would make that choice on moral or ethical grounds. Be real, people. Industrial agriculture will continue whether or not a small minority choose to support it. Those helpless cows and chickens and pigs and all of our other imprisoned nonhuman sisters and brothers will continue to be imprisoned until someone breaks their shackles and lets them out.
Oh yeah. One more thing, for all you vegans out there. Where do your organic soybeans come from? Where are they grown? Who harvests them? Who processes them and how are they processed? How are they transported to that groovy natural food co-op down the street? At what cost?
I hate to quote factoids, but try this one on for size: 90% of all of the drinkable water that is used by our civilization is used for industrial agriculture. Ok, that's enough for now, im out.
