Talk:God
From iA wiki
- Struck down? Silly Hunams ... I don't think it was talking about other worlds and beings as if true. It was written in a journalistic style, not "GOD IS IN CONTROL OF YOUR S.U.V.!" Why don't you let whoever-is-in-charge make decisions about who he thinks should get struck down, mmkay?
- Yep - I wrote that before I read your entry and realized your motivation was as an athiest or however you identify. When you use words like "struck down" you sound like a religious nut.
- Then we can all learn something from those crazy Israel and Palestine "thou shalt not kill? where does it say that?!" types. You're free to create different sections about religions but please don't start a flame war. Webfork
- Hm... I just checked out your Web page and, while I agree with you about issues of Church and State, its completely irrelevant as nothing said there perports that God exists or doesn't - only that people worship him/her/it. Maybe you don't like that but that doesn't make it untrue. Would you prefer we didn't imply that he existed as well? Because I'm just not going to write stuff fearing that I MIGHT offend someone - I'm just not that politically correct. And, while I try to present facts rather than opinions, I don't think we should censor what we say because someone disagrees. That's very against the cooperation this wiki represents. Webfork
Let me start over:
As far as I can tell, people worship a God. Maybe a God doesn't exist. Fictious events affect people (movies, for instance).
You appear to assume that, if Webfork is a reasonable person, the very idea of a God is preposterous.
Here's a sort of inane example: I don't know the math behind how computers work. Binary, hyperthreading, front-side bus. All mysterious subjects to me. I can't really write about these core subjects because I don't understand them and, on some level, don't really care. But I am definitely affected by them. The fact that computers aren't actively trying to recruit me or entities that oppress people of free will and autonomy doesn't make me any less interested in reporting on the subject. Generally, I prefer discussing subjects on the periphery of computers such as encryption or fat-pipes or GPL. But the core of the computer is influential to the Tech industry even if I'm really not that interested. Just like you're not interested and/or strongly dislike this "God" concept but it IS is influential to billions. Sure, microchips are more provable than God but the effect that this God concept has on people, even if its an illusion, isn't some topic I'm going to just skip over. -- Webfork
This topic is pretty busted and is generally lacking in any sort of direction. It doesn't explain what this god thing is or why people care.. Furthermore, regarding the general philosophies surrounding the topic, doing some linking to various beliefs might help.. I also think that the state vs religion issue could be linked to. There's a rather nice essay written by John Lock if I'm not mistaken. As for science vs religion, you may as well start talking about rock and roll vs christianity.. science is merely another religion.. a faith-based belief. People have faith that other people know what's best.. people have faith in reproducability and in their senses. For the same reasons, there are people who believe in god.. reproducability, observability and trust in others. Bleh, anyhow.. I had begun writing on this topic on my own time some years back, and someday I'll revisit it and possibly contribute. For now, this topic needs to be made less typically judgemental. There is no "science vs religion", and there is no "faith vs athiesm".. everything is grey. Just talk about the object, not the greater topic. Belief should be saved for another topic, and Beliefs for yet another. Cut the problem up into little pieces and tackle them each in turn.. don't be overwhelmed by discussing God vs god vs the evil cheeze-eating pagans vs Predator.. now in THX. -- Sy
- Fucking cheeze eating pagans...
- Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah...
- I encourage you to add to the topic. Some of the ideas you mentioned above are golden.
- No can do.. I've no time to do this the right way. -- Sy
To whoever added the Judeo-Chistian part: why? Perhaps i was a little vague when i initially wrote "the single supreme...many religions", but at the end of the day, Islam, Judaism and Christianity all believe in the same One Supreme God. Even more fringe religions that think it's a female God or a monster with six arms still eventually come back to the basic root of One Supreme God. I was trying to be all-inclusive, thus avoiding having to create a million different pages for the One Supreme God of each religion :-) == Amw
- Hmm.. there are many who would believe that the Islamic, and Judeo-Christian God are all completely incompatible entities. Both religions believing in one supreme being doesn't mean they believe in the same one. =) I've heard that islam politely nods to the notion of the christian god just as I've heard that the christian bible promotes the murder of islamic pagans. </devil's advocate> -- Sy
Apparently most people believe God is a male. They refer to it as a "he". These people have trouble understanding reality, space and time. This is a threat to my security. - ABliss
- /me h4x0rs into your beliefs. ;) -- Sy
I'm re-posting an earlier edit because I feel the current one cuts far too much. Webfork
I'm so tempted to be one of those annoying destructive wiki-ers and delete all the text that's there, replacing it with just the text "does not exist." But I won't. — Mlc
