Talk:Computer

From iA wiki

Topic desperately needs some linking.. perhaps at least to some outside resources discussing the history of computers? I personally wouldn't want to see this page turn into an oft-updated and always dated page discussing the latest models etc.. maybe just discuss the computer as the literal "counter".. and it's current use as an information tool.. discuss the actual word "computer". Discuss how computers have impacted people. Maybe link to UI or philosophies of human-computer interaction. Bring all of that back to "information", that being the major theme of this wiki. -- rack

Oh yeah, someone somehow has to make the "computer != internet" reference. The topic is about as tiring as telling people that my palmtop is an actual true computer, and having them exclaim "oh, it runs windows!". -- rack

I remember when I was younger and my family first got a computer, my grandmother said that we shouldn't play games all day. I didn't know what she was coming from. I have always thought people should generally use computers more. Now when I hear people say that a few hours per day is more than enough, I think - that is moronic. - ABliss

Since more and more activites can be done increasingly without leaving one's desk, it is less and less necessary to get up but that doesn't mean doing so is wise. There are a variety of negatives to spending 5+ hours on a computer from illnesses to repetative-stress dissorder, lack of physical activity connected with uncountable health problems, and beyond. Further, social relations with the opposite sex are usually hindered by a policy of 5+ hours in front of a computer.
The old generation, however, considers computers to be the same as television, where there one is purely an observer. The interaction and learning that can be done on a computer is vastly more valuable than what can be gleaned from most television. This is a difference between entertainment and development.
Conversely, living in dangerous areas such as a slum or place of social unrest may make being on the computer most of the time a very wise decision indeed. Webfork
