Talk:Capitalism

From iA wiki

"Free Market" needs to be described and linked to capitalism. Also, the evolution of capitalism into it's current form ought to be touched on somewhere. -- rack

The link between intellectual property creating wealth and natural resource use to create wealth is weak.

All people around the world require natural resources to live, all the time. I see capitalism as a leech which thrives on the lack of freedom, exploiting those in need. Its the file sharing that creates that wealth because spreading information multiplies knowledge and no-one is worse off. You forget that the internet allows for costless reproduction. If there was no copyright then the amount of information exchange online would increase dramatically. In this case, as in many others, economic rationalism is not progress, because it doesn't benefit everyone. Inventors, artists and other information producers rely on patents for anything other than greed. - ABliss

You missed the point :-) I wasn't talking about "wealth" as an abstract term, i was talking about wealth as a solid measure of dollars-in-your-bank-account, which is the heart of capitalism. You could certainly argue that a person may become spiritually or morally "rich" by giving his art away, but he wouldn't earn any money off it in the capitalist system, and this page was specifically about capitalism. -- Amw
Giving away something can increase your wealth. Resumes are a good example. Somebody with a good weblog might get that job. So sharing can benefit one's reputation. On the other hard, giving away free stuff to manipulate markets has proven to work as well. Wealth is not just profit or cash made from a transaction in a market. Wealth includes the things we all share such as the commons. Wealth includes things such as community and the public domain. The problem I have with capitalism is that is destroys all our wealth. Capitalism eats my future inheritance. Maybe we should move some of this into wealth? - ABliss
