Product Codenames
From iA wiki
See also: The Software Cycle
Many software projects have codenames that developers use to refer to the project internally. It is unclear how this came about, though it may be based on military operation names.
Microsoft famously introduced codenames to the public with Cairo (Windows NT 4.0) and Chicago (Windows 95) - two highly-anticipated operating system releases. The open source community also frequently uses codenames - Red Hat Linux 6 for example, was code named "Cartman," presumably from the show "South Park."
