An ideal is an idea, concept, preconceived model, even an unobtainable state of something that is an absolute perfection that has no equal. Examples include a holy grail, the public sphere, and standards of perfection. A popular social ideal is sustainable development.

Sometimes we find problems to which the ideal solution is very difficult or too complex to achieve. These lofty ideals are then neglected for a lesser alternative.
