Document file format is the de facto standard and was used by Microsoft Word by default until the introduction of OOXML in 2007. The main rival format is ODF (the Open Document Format) for OpenOffice, Abiword, Google Docs, Textmaker and KWord. More rarely is WPG for WordPerfect, TAB for NoteTab, and RTF for the Rich Text File format.

DOC files are vulnerable to Macro Viruses.
