A popular, open source (GPL) 3D modeling tool. Also useful for rendering, animation and post-production. Blender used to be developed by NaN Holding BV but that corporation went backrupt. The main author, Ton Roosendaal, asked for donations to set the source free and for that 100.000 EUR was needed. If that amount would be reached, Blender would be put under the GPL (details). A few months later, 200.000 EUR was reached. Also, the Blender Foundation was formed, which has tasks such as to insure and coordinate future development, keep the website okay, etc.

Pre-compiled binaries are available for Windows, Linux, IRIX, Solaris, FreeBSD or MacOSX.
