Blacklist
From iA wiki
Moderation or boycott list of bad things, like an abusive IP addresses. E-mail can also be filtered using a blacklist of known spammers. Blacklists are the opposite of a whitelist, althought the two are frequently used together.
Although potentially very negative things, blacklists are generally good in computer security:
- Stopping or preventing DDOS attacks
- Keeping harmful or commercial interests (RIAA, spyware companies, bad governments etc.) from connecting to your workstation or server.
- Preventing spam postings (for example, iA has a blacklist in place to prevent spam, trolls, and other harmful postings).
"Wholesale" blacklists are excellent security tools when they allow only a small number of addresses or locations access. For example, setting up your home computer to only accept connections from your work computer.
