Backbone
From iA wiki
Key servers most other servers connect to. These servers include those owned by UUNet, Cable and Wireless, and other Big Boys, tele-communications companies and ISP's.
While the internet was developed as a system that could re-route traffic in case of a severe physical attacks on servers, these serve as the spinal cord to the rest of the Internet's nerves, or individual computers.
If attacks are aimed at these so-called "back-bone" servers, it can sometimes make whole sections of the internet either inaccessible or extremely slow for some users. This is the antithesis to the theoretical distributed nature of network traffic.
