Satellite refers to an object in orbit around a planet or a man-made object placed in orbit around any solar system object. Placing an object in space is requires large amounts of energy from a rocket to defy the gravitional forces from Earth. The cost for the production and launch of satellite hardware is prohibitive. This has led to collaboration for some projects. Once in orbit satellite hardware is difficult to physically access, so the on-board systems have good redundancy.

The positioning of man-made satellites into Earth orbit, starting mid-20 th century heralded a new age in both communication technology and network security issues. Satellites have numerous broadband applications like remote sensing, classified surveillance, telephone, data, television and radio communications, etc. Satellites are particularly useful for broadcasting to rural and remote locations.

In the United States the FCC is charged with coordinating satellite communications.
