Patent pool

A patent pool is an organization of two or more corporations/companies or individuals who agree to cross-license their respective patents with each other on the condition that none of the participants to the patent pool flex their legal muscles against other members over their own patents.

One such pool, the OIN, licenses patents royalty free to entities which, in turn, agree not to assert their own patents against Linux or Linux-related applications.
