In IPv4, a 32 bit value, usually represented as a serie of four numbers, each between zero and 255 that serve as unique places to which information is sent and received. In IPv6, a 128 bit value.

Examples:

123.33.14.211
23.133.45.1
fe80::a00:20ff:fe74:738

IP Addresses are often considered forensic evidence in crimes but are not fool-proof. Detection can be avoided via a proxy, which routes information through a remote location, or many other methods. File sharing networks are often judged on how well they can escape IP Address detection.
