Graphics Interchange Format (GIF): An image compression format which uses a fixed color palette of 256 colors. This format is best for images with solid colors or areas of uniform color such as illustrations and logos.

The original author of GIF has insisted that the correct pronunciation is "jhiff" (soft g). Many others regularly pronounce it with a hard g.
