A file format is a generally recognized structure for storing data within a file. Think of it as a standard way of recording information so that other programs can recognize it. Software programs read and write to files in a specific way, based on the file format. Because file formats are typically associated with a specific software program, you may not be able to open a certain file if the corresponding software program is not installed on your machine.
