A programming construct used to hold data in a structured fashion.

The design of a data structures must take many things into account, including:

  • Speed of inserts
  • Speed of deletions
  • Speed of searches
  • Speed of updates
  • Potential for "imbalance" (as in Binary Trees)
  • Changes in structure do to inserts/deletions/updates
